They say you should write the book you would love to read. When I was first learning to play, I wanted an affordable, great sounding, easy to play flute. I've designed this flute with that in mind.
The Design
The flattened top makes it easier to keep holes covered and also much easier to play half-notes. I use a wider cutting edge than normal which makes the flute louder and more stable. Best of all, it greatly reduces over-blowing, so this flute is very forgiving to new players. This also makes the spacing between holes a little shorter so it's more comfortable for smaller hands. The flattened top also makes it easier to hold good pressure when keeping holes closed. Many people enjoy playing their flutes outdoors. The bird on this flute has a notch to help block the wind so you can play outdoors even if it's breezy.
432 Hz Tuning
. Every note on this flute has been digitally tuned to within ten cents or better. What makes this flute unique is that it is tuned to 432 Hz instead of the modern Industrial Standard of 440 Hz that was adopted in 1939. It's a subtle difference that you can't necessarily hear, but you can feel it. Native American Flutes are ancient, deeply spiritual instruments, close to nature.
Douglas Fir Wood
Fir is a softwood that's stronger than pine so it's less prone to warp or twist over time. It has such beautiful, flowing wood grain. Every Fir flute has it's own unique pattern of swoops and bands in the grain. I use flame to invert the colors in striking contrast. I also sear the inside which has the added benefit of hardening the wood. This makes the timbre of the flute more crisp and clear. What makes Fir superior to other kinds of wood, (especially many hardwoods) is that it doesn't wet out quickly. You can play for over an hour without having to stop and let the flute dry.
Key of A
A common question is which flute key to choose. The Key of A is a great choice for beginners. The shorter spacing between finger holes is very comfortable, even for older children. Key of A is one of the lower tones among the high toned flutes. They have a bright, cheerful sound and are really fun to play.
If you are a beginning player, then I strongly recommend learning on a key of A like this one. Flutes larger (deeper toned) than Key of A have larger spacing between the holes and the holes are further down so they require a longer reach. I only recommend a Key of A for beginners. That's the key they teach flute classes with, and it's a comfortable size for almost everyone. If you are buying a flute for a flute class, please note this is a 432Hz tuned rather than the standard 440Hz. Most teachers prefer you have a 440Hz A so you will be able to harmonize with the more common Key of A 440Hz flutes.
